Character Profiles of Internet and Smartphone Addiction in Korean Adolescents

Abstract

|
Background and Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the impulsivity, aggression, beliefs supporting aggression, behavioral activation system/behavioral inhibition system, state-trait anger expression, and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) tendency in internet addiction and smartphone addiction in Korean adolescents.
Materials and Methods : A total of 599 (392 males and 207 females) middle school students in Chuncheon participated in this study. Subjects were divided into addiction group or normal group according to internet addiction and smartphone addiction scale. All groups completed questionnaires, of Korean Internet addiction test (K-IAT), Korean smartphone addiction scale (K-SAS), Barratt Impulsivity Scale-11 (BIS-11), Aggression Questionnaire (AQ), Beliefs Supporting Aggression Scale (BSAS), Behavioral Activation System/Behavioral Inhibition System (BAS/BInS), State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), and Conners-Wells' Adolescent Self-Report Scale (CASS). K-IAT, K-SAS, STAXI, and CASS were used as short version to identify the relationship between internet addiction and smartphone addiction.
Results : Internet addiction group were found to have higher BIS-11, AQ, BSAS, CASS, anger expression, and anger inhibition compared to normal group. Smartphone addiction group were found to have higher BIS-11, AQ, BInS, BAS-drive, BAS-fun seeking, CASS, anger expression, and anger inhibition compared to the normal group. In addition, internet addiction, and smartphone addiction were correlated to each other. BSAS, BIS-11, BInS, CASS, and anger regulation influenced internet addiction, while BSAS, BIS-11, BInS, CASS, and anger expression influenced smartphone addiction.
Conclusion : Our results indicated an association of internet addiction and smartphone addiction. Both internet addiction and smartphone addiction could be related to aggression and anger expression.
